7 Resume Mistakes You Need to Stop Making

-

When you’ve finally found your dream job and fail to meet all criteria, it can be tempting to over-exaggerate your skills or achievements in your resume. If you think employers are unable to figure out a lie on your resume, then you’re completely wrong! A survey conducted by CareerBuilder has found that 75% of HR managers are able to catch a lie on a resume.

Job seekers are willing to risk it by lying on their resumes, because they have a very small window to grab the attention of hiring managers. As discovered in another survey, hiring managers spend less than a minute or 30 seconds looking at a resume.

If you thought lies were the only thing holding job seekers back, read on to know some of the common mistakes caught by HR managers.

Unprofessional email ID: An immature email ID is an immediate turnoff for the majority of employers. Create a new email ID that is simple and sounds professional if you want to land that dream job.

Skip proofreading: Majority of hiring managers reveal that they instantaneously rule out resumes with grammatical errors and typos. Make sure you proofread your resume or ask a friend or family member to review your resume before hitting the send button.

Generic & dull resume: A resume that is not customized to the job you’re applying for will immediately find its way in the rejected pile. Personalize your resume to fit the requirements of the specific job role, if you want to be seen.

Too text-heavy: If your resume includes never-ending paragraphs, a hiring manager won’t even bother looking at them. Make your resume easily readable, by breaking it into sections with bold headlines and text broken down into bullet points.

Lack of quantifiable results: Hiring managers want to see proven results of your past work. For example, the increase in sales revenue, page view or open rates. Think about your different career achievements and how you can quantify them.

Too much information: An ideal resume should be limited to one page containing only details that pertain to the job role. A resume that stretches to 2 pages is too long for hiring managers.

Missed out on the cover letter: Missed adding a cover letter to your resume? Kiss goodbye to your dream job, because 1 in 10 hiring managers won’t even bother considering you for the job role.
